Baroque city was in the modern period, around the 1700"s: signals the period of change into the modern city. Baroque, commercial city overlap each other and commercial, industrial. Loss of independence city overlap: centralization of power (absolute monarchs, power of church is curtailed, independence of cities is reduced. Baroque city: contained uniformity of state, with centralization of power, also the absolutism that the church had desired was now in the hands of the monarch. Emergence of nation states (function: protect interests of capitalism: city geometry contain many circles and roundabouts. Streets were long and broad for ceremonial purposes. City was a site for displaying power and ego of monarch. Impact of baroque: impact was different on different parts of europe, there was a loss of democracy in cities and towns as the state became centralized. Resulted in permanent bureaucracy, courts of justice, archives & records, buildings for official business (office buildings)
