When one partner is violent the other might shutdown to protect others. 4 types of ipv: physical violence 2. Psychological aggression: mind games, threats of violence, control of money. Financial reasons, children, isolation, love or emotional, pressure from friends and family, immigration can be all reasons why they stay with abusers. 1/3 of ipv is committed by an ex-partner. In 5% years, 6% of people in a partnership will experience ipv. Overall rates are going down but the severe ipv are going up. In 2013, 80% of police reports of ipv was women 20% were men. Discrepancy between self and police reported ipv. Upwards of 90% of those convicted for assault in ipv cases are men. Women experience more severe and ongoing violence than men. Women 6 times more likely not to report violence than men.
