Civilization and it discontents: in his work, civilization and its discontents, freud explains the ways people find happiness (such as through drinking, art, and love). Freud also talks about religion and points out how religion can lead to purpose and ultimately happiness. Purpose gives value to a person"s life, and religion is the purest form of purpose since it is grounded by rules and integrated into a person"s belief system. So in this sense, art, religion and science can co-exist with one another: however, if a person is not naturally talented in these regards, they have no other option but to be religious.
