Lecture: mill, civil liberty: the nature and limits of power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. (pg. 1: prevailing opinion: everyone is entitled to their own opinion. It is democratic: in a true democracy, opinions have consequences. Liberalism supports opinions for all: apathy: low voter turn-up, mass democracy vote (controlled by mass media) vs democracy as consensus, liberty (free from) (the people in power giving you rights)(has to be granted through civil rights) vs. Freedom (free to: the difference between advertising and advocacy to control opinions. Anything about you is none of society business. The person is an abstract person under the law. You are protected under the law as a person; it is not discriminatory: individuals are morally prior.
