Racism continues to shape power imbalances and human relations in society. Prejudice is an attitude, discrimination is a practice. Race is often seen as part of identity. Early american capitalism and european imperialism could not have developed without slavery and the dehumanization it made official - the african slave trade as basic to the early global capitalist economy (1800s) Early american and canadian racism the decimation of first nations people and the subordination of immigrants by settler society. Race is a category used to hierarchically rank people on the basis of racial biological and physiological characteristics, especially skin colour. Religious and cultural prejudice or discrimination is not technically racism. Tribalism classifying people as in-group or out-group members. Strong feelings of belonging to a group is part of our human nature as social beings while the propensity to dislike out-group members is something that gets socialized into us as children.
