Lesley harmon, the feminization of poverty: an old problem with a new name . Lesley harmon describes a social problem, the feminization of poverty, a problem that women have long been faced with but that has been concealed through a history of economic dependency on men. Her article focusses on the simple fact that without a man, a women is more likely to be poor and live in poverty. A women"s economic dependency on a man is essential to preserving the system of male dominance and ensures that women conform to certain roles around reproduction and labour. Women"s labour is however generally devalued and marginalized in society.
