SOCI 3692 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Class Conflict
Document Summary
Problem: class in itself rather than for itself. Each market has ppl with control of it, others depend. Factors promote class to be common interest group, factors preventing. Transparency: awareness of belonging in class; worker with poor life chances or workers with high wage; unlikely common interest. Status: prestige, re(cid:272)og(cid:374)itio(cid:374), (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:271)e (cid:271)ased o(cid:374) (cid:449)hat (cid:455)ou"re (cid:271)or(cid:374) (cid:449)ith; open/closed. Move in and out as matter of choice. Harder between astatic groups (monopoly over good material/ideal) Can be based on classes or status groups. Legit domination = force to dominate held in reserve. Traditional (habit, personal loyalty, rules according to customs) Charisma (devotion, faith, ruler has extraordinary quality, transitional) More abstract because more deductive positive understanding of law. Law is imposition/agreement: consent is given to those laws or else its imposed on citizens. May not exist empirically but can compare realities. Public (not belonging to individual; offices; higher ups) vs private (households; poor)
