Appearances appear real, but sociology causes that reality to waver. Goffman was very popular, he"s easy to read, he"s fun to read. The presentation of the self in everyday life is one of his earliest works. He wrote other works: stigma, asylums, frame analysis. The best way to approach goffman and to situate him relative to the other sociologists is relative to that term role. For parsons, role is that place where the actor and social system meet.
