SOCI 3692 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Peter Blau, Emergence, Social Fact
Document Summary
How the 2 forms of exchange differ: reprise. He takes exchange theory as long as it will go. He moves from micro social to macro social. The movement, somewhere along the line, he talks about emergent properties as you move towards the macro social. Things emerge that aren"t at the micro social level. Therefore, when you"re in the macro social level, logic begins looking a little bit different, you have a more social logic than an individual logic. He makes distinctions between social exchange and economic exchange. Most rational choice theories are those who use rational choice models. Assume that they are similar, blau assumes they are similar but also different. He points out that when he"s talking about social exchange he"s going to exclude 2 things. An exchange relationship, if it is truly an exchange relationship you have to exclude altruism or charity. In that case one is giving and the other is not giving in return, simply receiving.
