Sport became the production and reproduction of masculinity. Constitutes what it takes to be male/men. Historically place looked at to make boys to men: if one is good at sports, you get more positive reinforcement. Doesn"t happen in the same way for women: boys that are not good at sport fail at masculinity. Toronto maple leafs not winning a stanley cup since 60"s, butt of jokes: if failing at sport, they are constructed as feminine. Hockey is site of violence, a male sport versus the way females play the game: direct players and teams to what is gender-appropriate behavior. Sport is important site for reproduction of patriarchy. Sport is male institution: behavioral norms, ie. On playing field also how teams are constructed. As a male space, sport confirms male dominance: not just on sport, but sport reaffirms that. Job sites, family, peer groups, etc: all institutions merely reinforce each other.
