Baby"s sex to be recorded on the birth certificate. Seen from day one as shaping experiences: studies shown that people hold girl babies different from boy babies. Male and female (used in social world) is a binary. Often shape the way we see the world: influence how we see and interact with people, ie. Gender= culture, culturally produced: exchanges according to social context. Gender roles not natural, process of culture. Sex is also socially constructed -> increasing being critical. Gender plays to how we communicate and relate to others. In history of western thought: critical of only 2 sexes. Plato argues 3 sexes are part of human nature. Hippocratic theory: 3 males and 3 females, intersex -> born with both genitalia. Biological determinism determined by biology social or biological factors: emotions, sexual orientations, criminal behavior. Babies screened at birth: are given hormones, thus corrected limited approach to understanding gender/sex.
