Inspired by the ideals of human equality and freedom. *society can be explained using scientific analysis (even history, politics) Marx wants to figure out how capitalism works. Tension between a scientific marx and a philosophical marx. Thinks that capitalist society is fundamentally unjust and unfair, so it must be changed. Social justice is a urgent and necessary task (more equality and freedom for everyone) Thinks that capitalism will eventually self-destruct because of its own contradictions. *will be replaced by socialism, then by communism, then the communist utopia. *only way that real human freedom and equality will be realized. Sense that utopia/heaven only exists in the future. Sees the history of human kind as the self-realizations of geist in and through human beings and human society.
