City of man= temporal, earthly city of corruption, immoral, ruled by desire/appetites. City of god= eternal, realizable only after death. Church= mediates between the city of man and the city of god, both a human and divine institution. *task of the church= funnel humans out of city of man to the city of god. Accepts aristotle"s notion that all human knowledge starts with sense perception.
