Elements of social structure: institutions, social groups, statuses, roles. Five traditional institutions: family, politics, education, religion, economy. Important newer institutions: science and technology, mass media, sport, military, medicine. Two or more people who have a common identity, interact, and form a social relationship: secondary. Status - a position a person occupies within a social group: statuses in a family mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, wife, husband, child etc. Roles: associated with status, rights, obligations, expectations, guide behaviours, a single status involves more than one role. Elements of culture: beliefs, definitions & explanations about what is assumed to be true, values, social agreements about what is considered to be right & wrong. Norms and sanctions: norms: socially defined rules of behaviour , serve as guidelines for personal behaviour / expectations of others" behavior. Three types of norms: folkways - customs and manners of society, laws - formal norms backed by authority, mores - norms with a moral basis.
