Linked to economic dependency and social interpretations of what that entails. Youth and being young - highly valued: minors treated differently from adults. Ageism - the belief that age is associated with certain psychological, behavioural, or intellectual traits. Modernization theory - a theory claiming that as a society becomes more technologically advanced, the position of the elderly declines. Youth and aging - socially defined - definitions vary from society to society impacts a person"s life. Age grading - the assignment of social roles to given chronological ages. Birth 17 subdivided into infancy, childhood, and adolescence. 18 64 subdivided into young adulthood, adulthood, and middle age. Concept of middle age recent development life expectancy extended. Sandwich generation emotionally and economically responsible for both young children and aging parents.
