Antonio gramsci believed that everyone is a social theorist. To be sociologically educated is to see yourself as a social actor in a world full of powerful forces that shape what you think and feel, while also realizing what you contribute to sustain this world or change it. Gramsci also argued that individuals already use their intellects to explain how society works, but most of what we do is unknowingly biased. Many social theorist want to understand the taken-for-granted nature of social life: why it is so often unthinkingly orderly, routine, and generally predictable in sociological terms. We also expect the social world to follow the rules that we take for granted: people in canada will drive on the right-hand side. They key to understanding according to c. wright mills, is the ability to connect personal problems with larger forces in society/public issues.
