First form of life was simple bacteria. Half billion years ago explosion of life forms (sponges, jelly fish, worms etc) It explains how evolution progressed from bacteria to humans; focuses on progress of life. It didn"t say anything about how life originated. Went to medical school under the pressure of his dad. Trip was scheduled for two years he wasn"t chose because of his reputation as a naturalist. Ship already had a naturalist on it, darwin was selected by his friend. Darwin believed in divinity, and was not a fundamentalist like the other person on the boat; who believed that things didn"t evolve. Argument between fitz and darwin was impetus to his theory of evolution. Group of islands in diverse environments = meaning of the island"s name they went to. He saw a variety of novel animal types; diverse type lived in geographic different groups seemed logical that these animals branched off from some common ancestor.
