Distinction between substance abuse and dependence disorder eliminated. Because not all substances follow that framework i. e. hallucinogens . Recent, in the last 20 years that they have been trying to develop different treatments. Addition of severity rating instead of strictly diagnostic cut-offs alone. Severity ratings based on # of symptoms endorsed: Depressants: alcohol, sedative hypnotic or anxiolytic, opioids. Some want to classify it as a subtype. Inhalants - similar pattern to depressants - age:14/15 - leads to permanent damage to the nervous system. 9: other: steroids, designer drugs special k, angel dust (pcp) Use : ingestion of psychoactive substances; not significantly interfere with social, occupational or educational function in any way. Abuse : how much it interferes with user"s life. What"s the actual reaction that person has. Some level of impairment once someone is abusing a substance - performance is starting to slip.
