Lecture 80
• Human nature can be divided into three major components:
o the mind (our intellect),
o the body (our biological makeup),
o and the spirit (our emotional makeup)
• Third-force psychology (Humanistic psychology)
o Began in the early 60’s and began to wane in the 80’s
o The branch of psychology that is closely aligned with existential
psychology.
▪ ***Romanticism, existentialism and early Greek philosophy
were all antecedents of Third-force psychology
▪ Unlike existential psychology, however, Third-force
psychologists assumes that humans are basically good.
• That is, if negative environmental factors do not stifle
human development, humans will live humane lives.
o Third-force psychologists are concerned with examining the more
positive aspects of human nature that behaviorism and
psychoanalysis had neglected.
▪ Third-force psychologists attempted to help already healthy
individuals become healthier (reach their full potential)
