1. Astronomers
a. Reaction time The time between presentation of and response
to a stimulus is different. Calculated using personal equations.
Showed the observer influenced observation. (Friedrich Bessel)
Reaction-time was found by calculating personal equations.
b. Early Experimental psychologists were interested in learning
what was true about human consciousness in general.
i. Originally, individual differences found among
experimental subjects were attributed to sloppy
methodology. After Darwin, individual differences were of
supreme importance.
2. Objective and Subjective Reality.
a. Natural scientists were concerned w/ any discrepancy between
a physical event a person’s perception of that event.
i. The distinction between primary and secondary qualities
was avoided by concentrating on primary qualities
events for which there was a match between physical
qualities and the sensations they create.
b. Evidence there is not a point-by-point correspondence between
physical reality and the psych experience of that reality.
c. Physiology provided the link between mental philosophy and
the science of psychology.
