Lecture 79
a. Feminine Psychology
a. Horney agreed with Freud’s contention that anatomy is destiny
(major personality traits are determined by gender)
i. BUT, Horney said that males envy female anatomy (not
the other way)
ii. Males envy the capacity for motherhood - pregnancy,
childbirth, and motherhood, as well as of the breasts and
of the act of suckling.
iii. Horney disagreed with Freud on every conclusion he had
reached about women.
b. Horney’s position was that personality traits are determined
more by cultural than by biological factors.
i. Women are more culturally inferior to men – not
biologically.
b. Horney agreed with Freud on the importance of early childhood
experiences and unconscious motivation but disagreed with his
emphasis on biological motivation, stressing cultural motivation
instead.
c. Horney used free association and dream analysis and believed
transference and resistance provided important information.
d. Horney was much more optimistic about people’s ability to change
their personalities than Freud was, and, unlike Freud, she believed
people could solve many of their own problems.
