Lecture 71
Anna Freud
Anna Freud not only reserved and perpetuated her father’s ideas,
she extended them into new areas such as child analysis,
education, and child rearing.
o Anna regarded psychoanalysis her “twin” who started out life
competing for Freud’s attention.
o Anna concentrated on the analysis of children and
adolescents,
Ego Psychology
Anna Emphasized ego more in child analysis than adult because
children do not recall early traumatic experiences as adults do.
Children display developmental experiences as the occur
Rather than viewing the problems of childhood as reflecting
conflicts among the id, ego, and superego, as with adults, children
were viewed as reflecting the many vulnerabilities encountered
during the transition between childhood and adolescence and
young adulthood.
Developmental lines are attempts by the child to adapt to life’s
demands, whether those demands are situational, interpersonal,
or personal.
Developmental lines describe the transition from dependence on
external controls to mastery of internal and external reality.
