Lecture 55
a. Empirical - Theory of perception
i. Helmholtz believed that perceptions are learned.
ii. Helmholtz was the First to clearly distinguish sensation (sensory
excitation & nerve impulse) from perception (meaningful
interpretation of nerve impulses in brain)
iii. Helmholtz concluded mind learns to interpret sensations through
trial and error
1. Distorting glasses
iv. Unconscious inference = Past experience of the observer converts
a sensation (raw elements of conscious experience) into a
perception (sensations after they are given meaning by
experiences).
v. Individuals who had been blind at birth acquired sight the needed
to learn to perceive. (perceptual adaptation)
vi. Agreed w/ Kant that the perceiver transforms what the senses
provide.
b. Young-Helmholtz theory of color vision (Trichromatic theory) Expansion
but disagreement with Muller’s theory.
i. Vision - 3 Different color receptors on the retina corresponding to
three primary colors (each with its own specific energy).
