1. British Empiricism
a. The epistemology that asserts that the evidence of sensory
experience constitutes the primary data of all knowledge: that
knowledge cannot exist unless sensory experience has first been
gathered: and that all subsequent intellectual process must focus
on sensory experience in formulating valid propositions about the
real world. All Empiricists deny the existence of innate ideas.
2. Thomas Hobbes was the Founder of British Empiricism.
a. 1st serious attempt to apply the ideas and techniques of Galileo to
the study of humans.
b. After visiting with Galileo, Hobbes became convinced that humans
could be completely understood employing the concepts of matter
and motion
1. Galileo’s Mechanistic the universe consists of only
matter and motion, both of which are understood in
terms of mechanics. Humans and the universe are
machines.
ii. Believed that humans could be understood using deductive
geometry starting with a few undeniable premises, and
number of undeniable conclusion could be drawn.
1. Humans were machines functioning within a larger
machine.
