Using a subject variable means a between subject design will be used. Sometimes have to do a between su(cid:271)je(cid:272)t"s design: when fixed groups (eg. high vs low self esteem, can"t randomly assign groups, eg. Boy vs girls guys cant be girls and vice versa.
