5-6% of canadian children meet diagnostic criteria. Phobia is most common, panic disorders are uncommon in this age group. Worry becomes more prevalent and complex with age. Fears coincide with different stages of development. Most common anxiety disorder diagnosis in children. Persistent fear of acting in an embarrassing or humiliating way in social or performance situations. Okay with familiar adults but problems with unfamiliar peers and adults. May develop somatic complaints to avoid social situations. May have a history of separation anxiety. Fears must be intense and cause impairment. Excessive anxiety about separation from a major attachment figure. Worries about losing or harm befalling attachment figures. Comorbid with other diagnoses, gad most common. Excessive anxiety and worry that the child cannot control. Worries not due to a specific event or stress. Comorbid with depression, phobias and separation anxiety, social phobia. Highly time consuming, interfere with normal routines. Child may not realize there is a problem.
