PSYC 2230 Lecture 50: PSYC 2230 Lecture 50
Document Summary
One final potential buffer of the stress-illness relationship that has been investigated is expressive style (labott & martin, 1987). These investigators found that the use of humor as a way of coping moderated the stressing effects of negative life events, whereas emotional weeping (often thought to be cathartic) did not. In fact, their study reported that subjects who engaged in frequent weeping showed increased levels of mood disturbance when negative life events were frequent. Overholser (1992) has also found that humor is a useful method of coping with stressing situations, at least for some people. Internality-externality hypothesis conflicting evidence: body weight does not predict externality. Restraint theory restrained eater: external below set point (inhibited eater) eyebrow flick appeasement. Disinhibition overeating triggered by an event, emotion, or behavior eyebrow flick, which consists of a very brief lifting of the eyebrow upon greeting an acquaintance. This response is shown from three different cultures in figure 2. 5.
