The electroencephalograph (eeg) allowed researchers to discover that there are various stages of sleep. See growth motivation some people tolerate stress better than others. He has noted that those who tolerate stress well and remain healthy seem able to emotionally insulate themselves from the events around them. If emotion and motivation result from activation of the nervous system, as arousal theory suggests, there should be structures in the nervous system that trigger this activation. The endocrine system is a set of glands located throughout the body that secrete their substances directly into the bloodstream. The substances are called hormones and can be thought of as chemical signals that regulate or coordinate the activity of distant organs (selye, 1956). The major gland within this system is the pituitary, which has been called the master gland because of its role in controlling the other glands.
