Document Summary

Learning: influences development of motives; motivated acts are acquired/directed by learning. Learning is not maturation, which is change in behaviour as a function of age, and biological processes, whereas learning is a function of experience, training, conditioning. Ex: universal process of creeping, crawling, standing, walking (influenced by learning but it is inevitable); also have cognitive maturation, as seen in the conservation of mass. Puberty is irrespective of culture; it is biological, but has psychological aspects to it as well. Ucs is something to which we automatically respond; ucs is food that makes us salivate. Salivation is a reflex to the stimulus of food; a defensive reflex is if touch hot stove, pull away arm (stimulus heat, reflex is pull away) Our bodies are equipped with instincts that promote survival; does not require learning. Conditioned reflex prepares us for the eventual stimulus that will come. The conditioned stimulus is also known as a cue.
