Drive refers to an energized state arising out of need that propels organisms toward a goal that satisfies the need (biological imperative that is superfluous) and reduces the drive. High state of need = drive state is heightened = direct restlessness toward a goal that will satisfy your need. Reduce excitation in nervous system (pleasurable), increase in excitation is not pleasurable (page 226 opponent process theory figure 7. 7 and 7. 8: freud (id-psychologist) said moving force (drive) has four characteristics, pressure is strength of force.
