Bottom-up processing (data-based processing) - is processing is based on the stimuli reaching the receptor. Top- down processing (knowledge-based processing) - is processing that is based on knowledge: ex. Psychophysics the study of the relationship b/w mental and physical and proposed a number of methods for measuring this relationship. S. s steven"s developed this relate perceived magnitude and stimulus intensity. Present a standard stimulus and the subjects assigns a value to that stimulus and then increases or decreases the value based on how the perceive the change in the stimulus. Principal of transformation that the stimuli & responses created by stimuli are transformed/ changed while it is being perceived. We do not see a tree in our eye, we see the light that is being re ected. How the tree is perceived depends on the environment, is it bright outside, foggy, raining.
