Gibson felt traditional lab research on perception was limited/artificial - observers not allowed to move their heads. The lab research could not answer practical questions like how pilots could land airplanes using environmental cues. Gibson concerned with real world tasks (pilots landing using environmental information) Optic array - structures, textures, and contours in the environment. Optic flow - appearance of objects as observer moves past them. Gradient of flow - difference in flow as a function of distance from the observer. Gradient of flow - difference in flow as function of distance from the observer. Focus of expansion - point in the distance where there is no optic flow. Optic flow is zero at the point of expansion. Self-produced information - flow is created by the movement of the observer. Optic flow is created by the movement of the observer (self-produced information)
