PSYC 2220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Comparator, Optical Flow, Receptive Field
Document Summary
Functions of movement perception: understanding events - interpreting movements can help us understand events (perceiving angry movements can help us understand the event). Movement of objects or moving through objects assists in organizing stimuli. Simmel show how people observing objects moving interpret these as having intentions - understanding events. People make stories to explain the movements perceived in the heider and simmel simulation in order to understand events. We interpret movements of people to understand the event: attracting attention - survival in the environment. Attracting attention is a critical role of motion perception. Attentional capture - motion attracts attention to the moving object. If prey remains motionless, less likely to be noticed due to attentional capture (moving objects attract attention: information about objects - ambiguous objects that could be misinterpreted if you or the object does not move. Camouflaged bird is identified as a bird when it moves (information about object through motion perception).
