Psychometric vs rational approaches (example: mmpi vs. sentence completion batteries test) Influence of theoretical orientation on personality assessment. Distractibility, ability to tolerate stress, ability to work autonomously. The ability to work alone is important for grad students too, since grad school is all about independent work. For any theoretical construct (generosity, narcissism) you can devise measurement tests to let you measure these attributes in people. Usefulness of any personality theory would be extremely limited if the important concepts in the theory cannot be measured and therefore correlated. Psychologists like to use psychological tests in a time honoured tradition. Also in many ways what sets us apart from others in mental health professionals. Social workers and occupational therapists don"t use these tests. A good psychological assessment written about someone else should always have a formulation about personality. Sometimes people are referred for cognitive assessments, to see intellectual functioning.
