People use the 3 words interchangeably but although are interrelated they refer to different aspects of disliking others. Stereotypes- belief that certain attributes are characteristic of members of particular groups (ex. cheerleaders = long hair, fit, pretty); cognitive way of categorizing. Prejudice- an attitudinal/ affective response towards a certain group and its individual members; prejudging others because belong to certain group; have positive/ negative prejudices. Typically not socially acceptable to express prejudice and to discriminate; this creates conflict between what people think and feel and hat they express to others. Modern racism- (white- black relations) rejection of explicitly racist beliefs while maintaining an enduring suspicion and animosity towards african americans. Perceived norm about expressions of prejudice had shifted; people felt able to openly admit how they really felt. Discrimination harmful/ negative behaviors directed towards members of articular groups, can be blatant or subtle.
