Chapter 13: social & emotional development in middle childhood. Industry vs inferiority : period characterized by a focus on efforts to attain competence in meeting the challenges presented by parents, peers. Self-concept in middle childhood is characterized by: emotional, behavioral, psychological competencies: i am a happy person, i like/am good at basketball . Evaluative component: i am not as good at basketball as my friend. Preschool children"s self-esteem is typically measured by showing pictures and asking youngsters to judge which of two hypothetical children they resemble (e. g. , a child who makes friends easily or a child who does not make friends easily). With older children (and adolescence), self-esteem is often measured with questionnaires that require children to read statements. The most widely used self-esteem questionnaire of this sort is the self-perception. Profile for children (sppc for short) devised by susan harter, who made a pioneering effort in self-esteem research.
