Document Summary
Distinction between basic research and applied research: Basic: intention of learning more about a particular process and phenomena: such as learning about how memory is formed. Applied: when you do have a real life situation occurring and you are looking for a solution. Such as operant conditioning applied to classroom learning. Another distinction is between lab versus field research:lab: when using experimental method it is usually performed in lab. The great advantage of that is the greater control over the conditions and also you can easily get consent from them and debrief them. Field: when performed in the real life, and the advantage is that it resembles the conditions of real life situation better. The disadvantage is getting the research ethically approved as it usually involves privacy issues, and also debriefing is harder to do. Mundane realism: ideally you would want the research to have both kinds of realism.
