PSYC 2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Creative Commons, Naturalistic Observation, Content Analysis
Document Summary
Involves a lot of reductionism/simpliication of data: collecting numbers as data o, there is a loss of important information o. Focus on the meaning that things have for other people o: try to involve participants in the research process (not always the case) Sometimes qualitative and quantitative methods can be combined. Interviews o: naturalistic observation, videos of people o, open ended questions, written documents (speeches, emails, blogs, transcripts) o. Kinds of qualitative data: data that is gathered for the purpose of research. Sometimes there is reactivity when the researcher is involved in the study with the participant: data that already exists. Must be amenable to conscious verbal report. These reports mush shed light on the topic (this isn"t always the case) Typically are about groups or classes of individuals or situations. In general, try to identify similarities (emergent themes, how perceptions group together, common content) And try to identify diferences (themes, perceptions, content)
