PSYC 2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hawthorne Effect, Internal Validity, Demand Characteristics
Document Summary
Both have threats to external and internal validity. Advantages: subjects act as their own control (there is no diference in subject variables, each person is tested twice, the experiment needs fewer participants. Experiences in one condition could afect performance in another condition (ex: when deception is used, the person will catch on if you try it on them again) Practice: when a second test is better than the irst, it could be due to practice (ex: want to see if lighting afects people"s dancing skills while playing dance dance revolution. You test them in the dark, and the same people in the light. People do better in the second trial because they have had practice) Fatigue: when subjects do worse on the second condition because they have become bored or tired. Practice and fatigue are known as order efects because the order is ixed. To control for order efects: use more than on sequence, counterbalancing: balance inluence.
