Human science vs. natural science, 2 methods of inquiry. Natural concerns with establishing cause-effect of relationships. Understanding perspective from lived world , perform manipulation to observe effect of x on y. Variables = advanced conditions that researcher"s observed in real life. Events/conditions that show some sort of variation all psychological variables show variation. Example, walk into gr1 class & all students learned to add single digits. But, given kids addition test (scored), you will see variation in results. Compare ages, or school board, compare genders, compare groups with different education level. Punishment. (in school, it depends on personality trait introversion punishment/extroversion reward) Behavioral sciences = custom to make independent vs. Experiment manipulates independent variable, at least 1* anything less than that = deemed non-experimental. **hypothetical research question, determine whether valid research study. Relationship between independent and dependent variable is not always linear. Example, variation in ease with which children separate from parents.
