These are referred to as pre- post studies (before and after) There are a number of threats to internal validity. Any experiment with a confounding variable has no internal validity because you no longer know what the cause is. Any experiment that does not have control then there is internal validity. With pre- post studies what is done is that you have. This method is used when you are providing some sort of treatment. You get a pretest score. e. g subjects who are high anxiety people and you want to provide a treatment to see if it is effective. Maturation- individuals are developing, maturing or getting older. This means that very high scores are likely to become lower. If you start off with very extremely high scores they will become lower and on the other hand if you have low score they are likely to become higher. Testing and instrumentation- this involves practice effects.
