Document Summary
Biological basis of behaviour lecture 5: genetics, neurons. Genotype: the actual genetic makeup, such as xy or xx. Phenotype: the observable phenomenon, such as male or female: dominant vs. recessive. Dominant gene is the one expressed when the pair is heterozygous recessive genes have to be homozygous to be expressed. Neurons & glia: neurons: cells in the nervous system that receive, transmit, and integrate information. 70-100 billion: glia: cells that support the neurons. Nerve cells (neurons) & astrocyte (a glial cell) Sensory carry signals from the receptor toward the brain: motor carry information from the brain to muscles and glands. Soma (cell body) contains the nucleus, which contains dna: dendrites. Extensions of the cell body that receive information from other cells: axons. Extension of the cell body that transmits information to other cells. Pathway for electrical signals: myelin sheath surrounds the axon insulates the axon and speeds up impulse.
