Chapter 8 language & thought: a language consists of symbols that convey meaning, plus rules for combining those symbols, that can be used to generate an infinite variety of messages. There are more than 450 000 words phonemes. Examples: er, ee, streyng, z, tu: morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language. There are approximately 50 000 morphemes, which include root and prefixes and suffixes. Example: fire, gate, friend: syntax is a system of rules that specify how words can be arranged into sentences. A simple of syntax is that a sentence should have both subject and a verb. 2y two word sentence: an overextension occurs when a child incorrectly uses a word to describe a wider set of objects or actions that it is meant to. Example: a child might use the word doll to refer to only to a single favourite doll: telegraphic speech consist mainly of content words.
