R. l. a = light = wavelengths ---- hit retina---- transformed into sight by the brain. Definition of sensation: how physical energy is transformed into neural impulses. Quality of sensation: based on activity of the sense receptors. Two types of processing: bottom up processing. Three parts to bottom up processing: detect specific features of stimulus. 2) combine specific features into more complex forms. Three parts to top down processing: formulate perceptual hypothesis about the nature of the stimulus as a whole. 2) select and examine features to check hypothesis. Student representative: riaz - chapter 1 & 2 (calumet 214 - thursday) Experimental field- material is very physiological for sensation (the area of perception is where psychology comes in) What your senses tell you is not necessarily what you perceive (our mind distorts what our senses tell us) First half of lesson - try and process info in a way able to answer a short answer question accurately.
