Benedict anderson - classical de nition of nation - an imagined community formed through long-term historical process that generates similar culture, language, symbols, etc. Abstract idea in which we make concrete through out everyday actions. Walter connor - nation connotes a group of people who believe they are ancestrally related . Identity based on a common blood line. Clear distinction between the nation and the state. Nation is formed by individuals who share the blood line, share ancestry - belonging to this common ancestral background. State is different - has people who are not part of this blood line - state is larger than the nation. Nation-state - everyone descends from common ancestry - people look similar - homogenous. Multi-ethnic country - various ethnic backgrounds, clear differences. Nation tied to idea of speci c ethnicity - close ties. Consequently, a situation arises where people do not belong to the nation, but belong to the state.
