Ideologies offer meaning and identity in a world that remains devoid of ultimate meaning/ does not provide the answers to the meaning of life and the direction which society is taking. Ideologies seem/ are inescapable in the context of modern secular societies (religion no longer structure society - secular) Belief (cid:396)e(cid:373)ai(cid:374)s i(cid:374) so(cid:272)iety, (cid:271)ut it is a(cid:374) i(cid:374)dividual"s (cid:272)hoi(cid:272)e a(cid:374)d it does (cid:374)ot st(cid:396)u(cid:272)tu(cid:396)e so(cid:272)iety. Offer a guide to judgement and action. If you adhere to an ideology you will behave and think in a certain way. Ideologies are a necessary component of modern political life despite the fact that every 20-30 years or so a philosopher etc will proclaim ideology to be dead. Because they offer these answers they can ruin the possibility of critical thought: ideologies are presented as being the truth. They do so because they offer universal and necessary truths.
