Term ideology coined by antoine de tracy - an enlightenment philosopher. For de tracy, the term ideology was to replace the term philosophy. Philosophy considered to be too tainted by metaphysics and the quest of god, by abstract endeavours. De tracy wanted a science of ideas . Contained within the term itself is the original intention of the inventor - a science of ideas must replace philosophy. Napoleon - attacked de tracy and the society of ideologists - dreamers, utopians. Even today, negative connotations attached to term that is reminiscent of this attack from an authoritarian political leader. Banned the teachings of moral and political sciences in france. Ideologies will now be seen as a form of abstract knowledge - distorted interpretation of reality. Marx and engels will argue that ideologies do exist and are a necessary framework through which we can understand political reality.
