Document Summary

Law is nothing else than an ordinance of reason for the common good, made by him who has care of the community, and promulgated. (c 34-35) It"s a general definition of law, and applies to all types of law in aquinas" account. We are rational beings, who use reason to operate in our world/society: fundamental principle of the natural law: Good is to be done and pursued, and evil is to be avoided" (c 39) Some derivative principles: preservation of life and survival, education of offspring, pursuit of knowledge, social living (c40) There are a shit ton of ways in which people behave but these things are not consistent. There are more parts of the world where violence is more common than other places. If natural laws depend on our behavior, we would have to keep our commitments, and promises, as well as, maintain our behavior.
