Should a strong individual follow conventional justice? no. Glaucon and adeimantus: justice : justice is a compromise between the best life conceivable and the worse life imaginable. Best: commit injustice without paying a penalty. Worst: suffer injustice with no hope of retribution: because the badness of suffering injustice outweighs the goodness of doing it, everyone agrees not to do it. The just life is not the best life: we settle for it because we can"t have better. The challenge: glaucon: prove that justice is necessary and all you need to live a good life, adeimantus: don"t bring in the gods. The city: how does the city come to be, this is not an anthropological question. What are the origins of society: it is teleological. What is the purpose of society: civic justice.
