Unit six: technology in the age of imperialism (colonization: science, technology and justifications for colonization, the civilizing mission. Civilizing = racal and cultural overtone: many european believes that their civilization was superior to others. They took it upon themselves to go to other countries and try to teach them their ways justification for european conquest and dominance in 19th century. Based on paternalistic notion that it is the european"s duty to better the situation of the native who was not as civilized . Often used as a good way to justify a high power. Not just going to other counties to teach them but thought of it as social duty to raise level of stability and status in other countries. Considered people in other colonies less than them and so it was their duty to teach them to engage in these activities. Ideas about science and technology were important to be justified.
